PL-4.2 Indigenous health

Overview

Participants will be presented with an overview of North American Indigenous world view and culture, an Indigenous perspepctive of the colonial and state history of Canada and the impact events and practices have had on the health of Indigenous Peoples. Following discussion will provide a forum for participants to process information and consider the impact it has on their practise as Family Physicians, seeking room for professional change and growth.

Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe pre-contact Indigenous world view and lifestyle
  • Describe the depth of assimilationist actions by colonial and Canadian governments and the resulting impact on Indigenous Peoples and communities
  • Analyze their current practices, behaviours and attitudes to explore opportunities for positive change
