Overview

Indigenous health and social issues are discussed, including the major factors that impact the health and well-being of Indigenous peoples today, namely residential schools and systemic racism. Understanding these and other issues will help to dismantle racism and contribute to reconciliation as one begins their journey to gain knowledge that will help them to give culturally safe care. 

Objectives

  1. Define cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, cultural competency, cultural safety and cultural humility.
  2. Explain how the historical impact of residential schools and systemic racism have negatively impacted the health of Indigenous peoples.
  3. Learn pearls in communication and collaboration to interact effectively with and give culturally safe care to Indigenous patients, families and communities.
